Release Day – BEAUTY AND THE CURSE

image002What do you get when you cross an author who writes humorous, sweet contemporary romance with an author who writes darker, steamier sci-fi and paranormal romance? You get a humorous adult fairy tale, BEAUTY AND THE CURSE.

My critique partner and author, Cathy Tully, and I had a blast writing this novella together.

It’s only $1.99 on Kindle. Please check it out & if the spirit moves you, we’d love a tweet, Facebook mention, or a Goodreads TBR add!

Cursed by a jealous witch, wealthy recluse Anabel Charming is destined to grow uglier with each passing year. Only by having sex before her twenty-first birthday can this virgin’s spell be broken. Yet no man will agree to sleep with the humpbacked, pockmarked, one-leg-shorter-than-the-other “Freak of Park Avenue.”

When handsome Chase Singleton shows up on a quest to retrieve his grandmother’s long-lost talisman, which Anabel now possesses, Anabel is willing to give up the jewel…if Chase agrees to break her curse. With two days left before her chance at a normal life is lost forever, Anabel and Chase discover the reality of beauty, the power of sexual healing, and the meaning of love.

“With engaging characters, witty prose, and a surprisingly sweet romance, Beauty and the Curse delivers a thoroughly entertaining and heart-warming read.” —Melinda Leigh, bestselling author of She Can Run

Fearless Excerpt:

Angry red streaks snaked through his aura. “What manner of trickery is this?”

“Get off of me, barbarian.”

Name-calling? Really? Had her father taught her nothing?

“Barbarian? That’s funny coming from a savage.”

She gasped. “Savage? You’re the one on top of me.”

“As I recall, I wouldn’t be on top of you if I hadn’t needed to protect myself from your tricks.”

“I am a spiritual healer. I only wanted to repair your soul. You must release my people.”

“They’re free to go at any time. They choose to stay.”

His weight was crushing her, making breathing difficult, but she refused to let him see her discomfort. If she could calm herself enough, her spirit could reenter his, and she could try healing him again. This might be the only chance she got before he…What would he do to her?

She didn’t sense anything evil, vile, or malicious. Murder wasn’t present in his aura. The only thing she perceived was arousal. Typical male. Perhaps she could use that to her advantage.

There were three occasions when a person’s spirit was the most vulnerable: during sleep, during illness, and during sex—so she’d been told.

“You’ve invaded our peaceful village and took our people against their will. Forgive me for not believing you.” Her words were angrier than she wanted them to be. What happened to her shamanic training?

“Seems we have a lot in common, you and I.”

“We have nothing in common, barbarian.”

“Did you not invade my body against my will?”

“To heal your spirit.”

“So you say, savage.”

Would he stop calling her that? She was not a fierce, violent person. She was tranquil and at peace with the universe, dammit.

Well, at least she strove for peace.

“However,” he continued, “you needn’t concern yourself. My spirit requires no healing.”

“So say you. But our spirits have met, and yours told me it hid a deep wound. Let me back in. Let me into your body to heal you.”

His smirk surprised her. What could he possibly find so humorous?

“If anyone enters another’s body, it will be me.” His warm lips pressed against hers. As if to prove his point, his tongue coaxed hers to open for him.

She’d been kissed before, but not from a man so dangerous and commanding, or so good at it.

Well, she wasn’t about to waste the opportunity to do what she came here for, especially since nothing in his aura indicated malicious intent. His spirit simply sought to demonstrate his male dominance in a kiss. Nothing more. Ha. He’d learn who the dominant one was when she connected with his spirit again.

She opened her mouth and kissed him back. His pause indicated surprise. He’d obviously expected her to resist. When she didn’t let up, his jaw relaxed and his kiss deepened. She couldn’t deny the freedom her soul felt.

But she’d come to heal his heart, and as much as she would like to give in to the pleasure she was receiving, she needed to heal him first.

Again retreating to that tranquil place in her mind, her spirit gathered energy and flowed from her body into his. Her spirit didn’t get further than the impenetrable stone wall before it was thrown from his body again.

His lips were off hers, the weight of his body disappeared. The influx of warm night air came as a relief.

“Savage,” he boomed. “Stay out of my body.”

“If you enter my body, barbarian, rest assured I will enter yours.”

FEARLESS Release Day

Fearless CoverHOORAY! Today is release day for FEARLESS, book 2 in the Survival Race series. I’m super excited to share Fearless’ awesome first review (4 stars) from Goodreads!

“This is the follow up book to Captive and a fantastic piece of sci fi romance…I found the world building here to be truly fascinating…. Very good follow up to Captive. The first book explored being taken prisoner by aliens and trying to survive whereas this book explored the idea of living as a native on a planet dominated by a brutal race. Fans of the first book will be delighted to catch up with characters from the previous book and new readers will surely be clamouring to catch up! Recommended”- Marta Cox

You can read a sexy excerpt from the book and enter to win a free copy at Taking Time For Mommy’s blog today. Here is the book’s blurb…

TWO SOULS
Myia, a shaman-in-training, wants desperately to protect her peaceful village from the barbaric Highland invaders. To hone her powers of prophetic visions and healing, the village elders send Myia on a quest to heal the Highland leader’s heart and stop a brewing war. Myia’s mended many souls before, so this should be an effortless duty…until she meets the gorgeous, stubborn Highland warlord.

ONE DESIRE
Kedric, a gladiator who escaped enslavement, only wants to liberate the villagers from their common foe-a race that breeds humans for blood sport and genetic experiments. Fueled by his rage, Kedric is determined to take down the brutal enemy. So when a raven-haired beauty with a body made for sin tries to sabotage his mission, Kedric wants her gone. Yet no woman’s touch has ever left Kedric more annoyed…or aroused. Kedric knows he should shun her soothing embrace-but he can’t seem to stay away. As their passion grows, Kedric must decide between fighting his war or surrendering his rage-and his heart-for Myia’s love.

Smugglers, Covers, & a Free Giveaway

Today on the blog we’re excited to welcome romance author, Alyssa Alexander, who will  be giving away an Advanced Reading Copy of her debut novel, A SMUGGLER WORE SILK to one lucky commenter. But before we get to Alyssa’s post, here are the results of the FEARLESS cover poll from Monday. Out of 222 visitors, there were 31 total votes broken down as follows:

  • Historical Romance               0 votes      0 %
  • Erotic Romance                      11 votes     35.48 %
  • Paranormal Romance            7  votes     22.58%
  • Contemporary Romance       8 votes      25.81%
  • Sci-fi/ Futuristic Romance   0 votes      0 %
  • Romantic Suspense                5 votes      16.13%

Though the majority of votes were for erotic and contemporary, you may be surprised to learn that FEARLESS fits best into the Sci-fi/ Futuristic Romance genre (which received 0 votes). Though, I think it could also be categorized as a Paranormal Romance (which received the 3rd highest votes). Either way, it’s clear to me that this book can’t be judged by it’s cover alone. That’s okay. Most people read a book’s blurb, right? They can also read an excerpt on my website and peek inside at Amazon. Fearless is available for pre-order now and releases January 7th (less than 2 weeks away!).

Guess who else has a book releasing that same day? Our guest blogger, Alyssa Alexander. Welcome Alyssa!!

9780425269527_medium_The_Smuggler_Wore_Silk(1) Thanks so much for inviting me to be on Attacking the Page, Kathy! I was delighted to discover we share a book birthday. Having read CAPTIVE, now I can’t wait to get my hands on FEARLESS!

Since we’re only a few short weeks away from our shared release day, I thought perhaps I would give readers a chance to get to know the hero and heroine of THE SMUGGLER WORE SILK: spy Julian Travers, Earl of Langford, and smuggler Grace Hannah. And, while I’m at it, how about some fun facts about me, as well?

First, a little about the book:

After he is betrayed by one of his own, British spy Julian Travers, Earl of Langford, refuses to retire without a fight, vowing to find the traitor. But when the trail leads to his childhood home, Julian is forced to return to a place he swore he’d never see again, and meet a woman who may be his quarry—in more ways than one.

Though she may appear a poor young woman dependent on charity, Grace Hannah’s private life is far more interesting. By night, she finds friendship and freedom as a member of a smuggling ring. But when the handsome Julian arrives, she finds her façade slipping, and she is soon compromised, as well as intrigued.

As she and Julian continue the hunt, Grace finds herself falling in love with the man behind the spy. Yet Julian’s past holds a dark secret. And when he must make a choice between love and espionage, that secret may tear them apart.

Now, let’s get to know Julian and Grace!

Five Fun Facts About Grace:

  1. Food: She usually has a glass of good French red wine when she visits the local pub.
  2. Weapon: She carries a pocket pistol, and she knows how to use it.
  3. Medical Skills: If you have the croup, megrims, need stitches, or need to set a broken bone, she’s your girl.
  4. Activity: Grace is an accomplished horsewoman and even rides astride. Shhh…don’t tell! It would ruin her reputation!
  5. Secrets: She tries very hard to hide behind the mask of poor relation, but you can’t hide a rebel smuggler forever.

Five Fun Facts About Julian:

  1. Food: He loves gingerbread, and lest you think authors often put themselves into a book, this author vehemently dislikes gingerbread.
  2. Weapon: Among the other deadly odds and ends on his person, he carries a knife in his boot.
  3. Medical Skills: Julian knows nothing beyond battlefield basics, which will do in a pinch. Particularly if you’re a spy.
  4. Activity: He’s in the business of espionage, which means he knows all those spy tricks about fading into shadows and hand to hand combat. You know, the fun stuff. Regency martial arts!
  5. Secrets: Julian has been carrying his secrets for far too long. But secrets have a way of being discovered, and his are very close to the surface once he returns to his childhood home.

Five Fun Facts About Alyssa:Alyssa Alexander

  1. Food: I love bacon. On everything. Actually, I just like food.
  2. Weapon: I have never touched a pistol, rifle, musket, or any other firearm. Nor have I touched a knife that isn’t intended to peel potatoes or chop onion. I’m sure I would be missing digits or limbs if I tried.
  3. Medical Skills: I’m very experienced at putting superhero band-aids on small children. Beyond that, I’m at a loss.
  4. Activity: I’ve ridden a horse only once, and it left me quite bruised. I know nothing of martial arts or any other tricksy spy things. But I do love yoga, and find it helps me balance a full time job, a family and a writing career. My favorite poses are Pigeon (when I can do it) and Warrior III. But my very, very favorite pose is the Couch Potato, preferably accompanied by Potato Chips.
  5. Secrets: If I have any, they’re so secret I’ve forgotten them—which is probably for the best!

Now that you’ve met Julian and Grace, I’d love to give away an ARC (Advanced Reading Copy) to one random commenter! Good luck!

Alyssa Alexander spends her days working, her evenings playing with a kindergartener, and her late nights writing. She lives in Michigan, but is quite certain she belongs somewhere warm and sunny where drinks are served with little paper umbrellas.

THE SMUGGLER WORE SILK is available for pre-order now at Amazon and Barnes & Noble. Watch for Alyssa’s next book, IN BED WITH A SPY, coming in fall of 2014. In the meantime, you can visit her here:

Cover Reveal for FEARLESS

When I’d received the cover for my debut novel, CAPTIVE, we had a little fun on Attacking The Page trying to guess the genre of the book based on cover alone. The poll resulted in most people guessing a genre different than what the book actually is. Click here to see that post.

Now that I have the final cover for FEARLESS, I thought we’d try again. Of course anyone who has read the first book will already know the genre, but I still want you to vote. And here is the reason why…I must be honest and tell you that although it’s a great cover, I personally think it misses the mark on the genre. Am I wrong? That’s what I hope to find out.

Based on this cover alone, what kind of Romance would you expect to read?

Fearless Cover

The poll closes at 9:00 pm EST on Wednesday 12/18/13. Don’t forget to visit again on Thursday to see if you guessed correctly. :)  In the mean time, does your answer match up with the book’s blurb?

The Doctor and River Song

The Doctor and River Song in The Name of the Doctor

If you are a Doctor Who fan then you either love River Song or you hate her. Is there an in between? I happen to love her. She is tough, smart, sassy, and can slap the doctor silly. (I hear actress Alex Kingston doesn’t pull her punches.) I hope to see more of her in the future with the 12th Doctor. Or would that be the past? Her past maybe. It’s all a bit wibbly-wobbly timey-wimey, isn’t it? Sorry if that reference doesn’t make sense to non-Whovians, but basically the Doctor is a Time Lord from the planet Gallifrey who travels through space and time in his TARDIS and protects Earth from alien invasions. He can live for hundreds of years and cheats death by turning himself into a new actor. ;) River is also a time traveler. She and the Doctor don’t always meet in the right order, which makes dating and marriage difficult though they seem to manage. It’s really quite fun.

Anyway, I’ve been trying to study the chemistry between the 11th Doctor and River to find out what makes them such a great couple. Definitely the banter.

From the Impossible Astronaut:

Doctor: [smugly, just after explaining how he determined where the mysterious phone calls to President Nixon were originating from] …And Doctor Song, you’ve got that face on again.

River Song: [bemused] What face?

Doctor: The ‘He’s-hot-when-he’s-clever’ face.

River Song: This is my normal face!

Doctor [even more smugly]: Yes it is.

River Song: Oh, shut up.

Doctor: [smiling] Not a chance.

Also from the Impossible Astronaut:

Doctor: Shout if you get into trouble.

River Song: Don’t worry. I’m quite the screamer. Now there’s a spoiler for you.

But what else is going on that draws viewers in? I ask because I’m creating characters right now where the hero is a scientist, a thinker, a brainiac and the heroine is a warrior. It didn’t dawn on me until a few days ago that my couple sounded like the Doctor and River…well minus the time traveling, and the living for hundreds of years…and oh, a lot of other stuff. The question is how do I make my pair a winning combination? How do you make a warrior heroine tough but not over the top? How do you make a scientist hero clever but not annoyingly so? How do I make each vulnerable for the other (yes, it’s a romance…with action-adventure and a bit of sci-fi)? I’d love to hear your thought in the comments section even if you don’t have advice to share and just want to talk about Doctor Who. :)

Anyone know what time the 50th Anniversary special is supposed to air in NJ?

By the way,  happy to report that my sci-fi romance Captive (book #1 in the Survival Race series) is now available at Amazon UK!

The Adam & Eve Approach to Character Development

“The Creation of Eve” by Paolo Caliari (1528-1588)

About a month ago I’d been asked the following question in an interview. “When you decided to develop a hero and a heroine, how does that process come about? Do you do the character sketch? Do you use real world influences?”

Sometimes I get an idea for a character and then create a story around them. Sometimes I get an idea for a story and then create a character to fit the story.

In Captive (book #1 in the Survival Race series) I had a story idea first and then created the characters to fit the story. The plot required a tortured alpha male whose humanity is stripped away. I created Max–the poor hero believes he’s nothing more than a beast–to fill this role. Then I had to figure out what kind of heroine could make him see he’s not a beast. He’s a good man worthy of love. So I created a strong, spirited heroine who could inspire Max.

The hero of Fearless (Survival Race #2) was introduced in Captive. His character was already partially formed so I needed to create a story around him. As I brainstormed the plot, I also brainstormed the kind of heroine he required. Since he wants revenge, he needed a heroine who could tame his lust for war and bring peace into his heart. His heroine was created especially for him, and new to the series. This couple was exciting to write about. The warlord and the spiritual healer have opposing goals, but we all know what happens to opposites, right? Sexual tension! The heat level is a bit steamier in Fearless than Captive.

While plotting Survival Race #3, I realized once again that I have a hero and a partial plot but no heroine. I actually went through three different heroines trying to figure out who would work best! The first two weren’t getting the job done. They were already established characters, but were not right for what the hero needed or what the plot needed…or, quite frankly, what I needed. Those heroines weren’t getting me excited to write the story. After much cogitating, I came up with a new character. This kick-butt alpha heroine is exactly what the hero needs, and boy is she going to be fun and exciting to write about. I can’t wait to see their tension ignite the page.

So what have I learned about my character development process? Apparently I take the Adam and Eve approach. I create the man first and then from the man create the perfect woman for him.

No matter how the character is born, I always do a character sketch to get to know each one better. A character sketch answers questions like what do they look like, what is their history, what are their fears/ likes/ dislikes, etc…  I’ve also taken bits and pieces from real world influences, but don’t tell my family or friends that. ;)

Readers – have you ever read about characters that were perfect for each other? Have you ever read about characters that weren’t and wondered why the author forced them together? Writers – What’s your process to character development? Do you do the character sketch? Do you use real world influences? Please leave your answers in the comments section.

The Flesheater

No, I’m not referring to zombies.

Flesheater Combat Knife
Photo courtesy of Jim Hammond’s website

I’m talking about this fierce looking combat knife called the Flesheater. It was designed by world renowned martial artist and retired USMC Master Sergeant AJ Advincula, and custom made by knife maker Jim Hammond.

It’s also the knife alpha gladiator Max uses in my sci-fi romance, Captive (Book #1 in the Survival Race Series). This 14 inch knife with its nine inch re-curve blade was designed for one thing, combat. And Max knows how to wield it in a fight.

I own this knife (though my husband mistakenly believes it’s his, but let’s not open up that can of worms) and train with it. Let me tell you, it is one serious weapon. You can cut a limb off with this thing! Don’t believe me? Watch the ten second video below.

Relax, no humans were hurt in the video. We simply took a rolled up tatami mat and soaked it in lake water (we were at karate camp at the time. Uh yeah, karate camp isn’t your typical camp, folks). This dense, waterlogged tatami is supposed to simulate the muscle of a human arm. I suppose if you wanted to simulate bone, you’d add a dowel to the center of the mat. Anyone can cut through tatami with a sword, but you need to have good technique with a short blade. Play the video clip and watch me hack off a limb what this awesome knife can do. *Warning* Don’t do this at home kids.

If Max could see me, I hope he’d be proud.

For specifics on the Flesheater knife, its history, and design, including the unique four grip handle, I encourage you to click over to Custom Knife Maker Jim Hammond’s website.

To see Max wielding the Flesheater combat knife, read Captive, and enjoy the adventure!

Exotic Settings for Stories – by guest blogger Sascha Illyvich

Torn to Pieces_USA Today bannerToday I’d like to welcome guest blogger and erotic romance author Sascha Illyvich to Attacking The Page.

What sort of settings do you like exploring in your romances?  Are you fond of the newly created worlds authors come up with, with new rules?  Or do you long for something paranormal to happen in the modern world with only slight changes to the game of life?

In Torn to Pieces, my USA TODAY Recommended Read from Sizzler Editions, I chose Albuquerque, NM as the base for the story.  My heroes are wolves and the heroine (it’s a ménage) is a witch who longs for free land to roam and play.

I spent a considerable amount of time there before writing the book and have actually used Albuquerque as a backdrop for several stories.  Most notably, Torn to Pieces, but also for an upcoming Secret Cravings Publishing release entitled Raining Kisses.  In fact, the loft Iolite lived in is the same loft Nicholaus lived in as I used the place I stayed in while on business there.

Things I like about Albuquerque, NM as a backdrop for books.

  1. It’s spacious.  Mountains, desert, a decent downtown scene
  2. The weather appeals to the supernatural curious in me
  3. I won’t lie, the bars downtown are pretty hip too LOL!

The thing about the bars has more to do with the fact that it’s got a party scene, so if I want to set spy stories there, or have characters who hide, it’s perfect.  I really enjoyed looking out on my balcony with a cigar in hand at the majestic mountains, and seeing some of America’s history at the same time.

Still, the snow in winter sucks LOL!

Where are some of the places you like to “visit” from books you’ve read?
